Five Ways To Cruise Tahiti

Five Ways To Cruise Tahiti

We feel it’s only fair to warn you … in this article we’re talking about five wonderful, glorious ways to cruise Tahiti.  Sun-kissed, white-sand beaches, palm trees, impossibly clear water, spectacularly beautiful islands and atolls, majestic mountains and plunging ravines, waterfalls, warm and welcoming people, culture and traditions … there’s a reason why people describe Tahiti as heaven on earth!  Let’s look at five different ways to cruise these incredible islands.

(Note:  For each of these options we have special flexible booking options - see below)

Aranui 5

Cruising Tahiti's Marquesas Islands with the Aranui 5 is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!  Different from traditional cruising, the Aranui 5 is a working freighter - the lifeline for the people living on the remote Marquesas Islands as the freighter delivers essential supplies.  Everything from fresh goods to cars and building supplies arrives via Aranui 5 and watching the unloading operation by the dexterous crew is fascinating!

Aranui Cruises began solely as a freighter service, adding passenger accommodation in 1984 with Aranui I.   As demand for more passenger berths increased, the ships have been replaced and now the Aranui 5 combines the freighter requirements with comfortable passenger accommodations, restaurant, bars, swimming pool and more.  You get to experience the magic of cruising Tahiti's spectacular isles as well as experiencing the freighter in action.

The ship is eagerly awaited by the locals who will greet you and welcome you ashore.  The children are likely to take your hand and the women will delight in showing you their crafts.  You can learn about the ancient traditions of tattooing, the history of famous writers and artists who called the Marquesas home, or enjoy the guided walks.  Shore excursions are included throughout the cruise, if you wish to participate.

The Marquesas Islands are so remote that you won’t be overrun with other tourists.  There’s plenty to explore, incredible landscapes that will have you reaching for your camera, walks, waterfalls and more.  On the other hand, you might like to just sit back, relax and watch the incredible crew in action as they unload the freight.  However you decide to enjoy the Marquesas, this is one trip that will stand out from the rest.

Special Offer:  For bookings mad on the Aranui 5 before 30 March 2021 for 2022, Ultimate Cruising is offering a no cancellation fee policy right up to when final payment is due (120 days prior to departure).  Ask us for full details!

Gorgeously appointed staterooms, beautiful public areas, superb crew, gourmet meals and included beverages make cruising Tahiti with Ponant one of life’s true pleasures.  Sailing under the French flag is also rather appropriate when cruising French Polynesia!

Typically Ponant offers just a handful of Tahiti cruises each year, often as part of repositioning the ship from one part of the world to another.  Itineraries will often be slightly different to the normal round trip voyages and offer destinations such as the Austral Islands or combine Tahiti with Easter Island or perhaps a one way voyage from Tahiti to Hawaii.

You won’t find round trip, solely Tahiti cruises within the Silversea portfolio.  Silversea calls into Tahiti within repositioning cruises too but this makes for some incredible voyages.  Fiji to Tahiti (via Niue, Cook Islands and more), Papeete to Valparaiso (via the Gambier Islands, Pitcairn Island and Easter Island) and in reverse four months later.

These itineraries are fantastic for those wanting to experience Tahiti but also some of the wider South Pacific and destinations that a bit off the beaten track.
